Story
A psalmist first. Never a performer.
Amara Wells, worship leader and psalmist. Based in Atlanta, GA.
Amara Wells began leading worship at fourteen in a storefront church on the west side of Atlanta, on an upright piano with two keys that stuck. She learned to play by ear and to pray with her eyes open, watching the room.
Through her twenties she led a Friday night prayer meeting that started with six people and grew until it filled a borrowed gymnasium. The songs on her first EP were written there, most of them in the middle of the night.
Today she serves churches, conferences and prayer gatherings across the country and leads the monthly Altar Hours night in Atlanta. She keeps her calendar small on purpose, so every night she says yes to gets her full attention.
She lives in Atlanta with her husband and their two sons, and she still plays an upright piano.
The song is not the point. The song is the door. My job is to hold it open long enough for people to walk through.
